African Tech Radio honours smartphone brands at maiden awards

The award touches on the significant contributions of smartphone brands in Nigeria’s promising tech industry in the last 12 months.

LAGOS – Online tech-driven medium, Africa Tech Radio has recognized TECNO and OPPO at her maiden Africa Tech Awards ceremony on December 11, 2020.

Held in Lagos, Nigeria’s tech and commercial capital, the recipients were picked for honours in three categories after a painstaking online survey attempted by the medium’s audience.

In the Most Preferred Smartphone Brand category, TECNO received the highest tally on the voting sheet to clinch the recognition. Oppo scooped the Most Popular Smartphone Brand award. The grand prize in the Most Innovative Smartphone of the Year category was bagged by TECNO’s POVA at the colourful one-day event.

In attendance were brand representatives from major smartphone brands, tech CEO’s and enthusiasts, industry analysts and the media.

The PR and strategic partnership manager for TECNO Nigeria, Jesse Oguntimehin who led the TECNO Nigeria team; CEO of Gold Token Limited, Tochukwu Okudo; tech entrepreneur Nehemiah Adegor; and Global Rotary Radio OAP, Blessing Belonwu were among those at the occasion. 

Others include PR Strategist, Dolapo Onaduja; Music Producer and DJ, SmithBeatz; Media Executive, Esther Adeyanju; music artist, 2nex D, and OAP Africa Tech Radio, Tony Ibe.  A major highlight of the event was provided by actor, comedian and media personality, MC 4 God, with his topnotch comic rendition and quips.

Speaking on the objectives of the awards, General Manager, Africa Tech Radio, Josiah Okonkwo said, “It is a step aimed at underscoring the invaluable contributions of smartphones to innovation, life and living as well as the growth of the African economy. We are working towards expanding the focus of the awards and making it an annual event, taking into consideration the power of innovation.”

“The Nigeria smartphone industry is rightly the starting point for us at this time. There are potentials in the industry and you would find this in the great work put forward by brands in the space. Recent statistics on the number of smartphone users validate this standpoint and this is despite the uncertainties and socio-economic challenges that shaped the year.” 

According to the host Gloria Olufeko, Africa Tech Radio is the first online tech radio in Africa with a 100% focus on Africa’s technology.

She also added that Africa Tech Radio is strategically positioned to be the eyes within the African technology sphere, revealing the directions to which technology is moving and documenting how Africa is allowing technology to change and move her into a whole new world.
